My Story

An established and well travelled DJ and UK radio broadcaster for over 30 years, Abi’s transition from the airwaves to the printing press was born out of profound necessity during the global stillness of 2020. Retreating to rural Kent, she occupied the temporarily empty studio of her father—the celebrated British printmaker and humorist Graham Clarke. Within this space of rich artistic lineage, an enforced sabbatical created the time and space for a significant creative evolution, resulting in the birth of her multidisciplinary brand, Super Natural Thing.

Abi’s style balances the tactile, raw texture of traditional printmaking with a vibrant, contemporary aesthetic. Beginning with screen printing and hand-dyeing organic garments and sustainable textiles, her creative curiosity quickly drew her towards working on paper. A lover of typography, she began to make use of her father’s ancient Cogger press, printing heavy wooden block type and combining it with layers of vintage, handmade paper with it’s uneven deckle edges sourced from the nearby historic Hayle Mill.

Abi’s work embraces the analogue… Her pieces celebrate physical vulnerability—the irregular bite of the wood type, torn,feathered edges of the hand made paper and the combinations of vibrantly coloured acrylic paints.

“I love the imperfections of the hand printing process, colours and textures are key in my work. I draw inspiration from nature and the sea, together with the shapes and colours of seemingly mundane everyday items that catch my eye.”

A lyrical cadence underlies each piece. Informed by her music background, text functions as both a visual anchor and aconceptual focal point. Striking typographic elements frequently mirror iconic song lyrics, grounding abstract fields of electric colour with a deeply personal, nostalgic resonance. This innovative fusion of music subculture and historic print methodology has rapidly garnered critical acclaim, translating into commercial commissions, bespoke album art for independent record labels, and private commissions together with a loyal and growing gathering of collectors.

Opportunities to exhibit her work soon followed at The Woodbridge Festival of Art and Music, Deal’s prestigious Linden Hall Studio and The West End House Gallery.

Together with her own working music and art, she continues to curate comprehensive retrospective exhibitions honoring her father’s monumental 60-year career as an artist, author and printmaker.
